School pilot of the Zip adaptive phonics programme
"Of the 100 children who completed the KS1 Zip pupils’ survey, 97% stated that ReadingWise Zip is helping with their reading, and 98% said they liked doing Zip."UK Government-funded study, 2019
What is Zip?
Zip is an adaptive learning programme, following a structured phonics programme based on Letters and Sounds (link opens PDF). aimed at children aged 5-8. The programme helps them to master letter and word-sound correspondences.
Zip is a supplementary resource and works alongside your day-to-day reading activities. It can help to fill in gaps where children might be missing certain letter-sound corresondences. It can be used at home as well as at school.
Zip has a smart algorithm that understands when a child has mastered a letter and word-sound correspondence, which means it is personalised, with each student working at their own pace. We recommend 5-10 minutes use a day, with each student working on their own device.
Read more about Zip.Pilot Aim: Is Zip good for Australian children and in Australian schools?
Over the past 8 years ReadingWise has helped over 30,000 children improve their reading in UK schools. We'd like to partner with schools in Australia to find out if the ReadingWise Zip programme works in the context of Australian schools. Let's find out together. This will be a collaborative pilot with a limited number of 10 schools.

.How will the free pilot work?
Here's the outline:
- Groups of students will be given access to Zip. This can be whole class or smaller extraction groups.
- Each pupil needs a device and headphones.
- The Zip programme is online, accessed through a browser.
- Use will be approximately 10 minutes a day, up to 5 days per week between now and mid-December (or option to continue over the summer break or pilot over the summer/long holiday break).
- Participating schools will benefit from free access until December 2020.
Zip Programme Research in 2018-19
We ran a UK government funded Strategic Schools Improvement Fund (SSIF) project in the UK in January 2018. The aim was to explore if using systematic online programmes helped support closing the reading attainment gap, empowering learning assistants to work with groups of children. 17 schools took part, and the project and data gave us compelling evidence of postive impact. Would you like to explore Zip with us too?
