A Complete Online Literacy Programme for Local Authorities
Local Authorities (LAs), also known as councils, are responsible for funding, maintaining, and overseeing 11,400 mainstream primary and secondary schools (56% of all mainstream schools in the UK). In England, many schools have transitioned in multi-academy trusts. However, local authorities are still responsible for overseeing the education of 3.6 million pupils.
ReadingWise can equip your local authority and your primary and secondary schools, teachers, TAs, literacy leads, and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENDCos) with highly targeted and tailored literacy intervention modules that can help pupils of every age and in every key stage improve their literacy and achieve higher levels of reading.
Funding for local authority schools comes from the Department for Education (DfE), managed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Schools overseen by a local authority can also apply for additional funding for pupils, known as the pupil premium grant.
Local authority schools can apply for the pupil premium grant to pay for targeted interventions such as ReadingWise.

Results ReadingWise can achieve for Local Authorities
"Education is a huge priority for the Council, and it's going to determine the life course of our children and young people to a huge extent… I haven't found anything as good as ReadingWise for literacy."
Improve Phonics, Decoding, Comprehension, and Vocabulary for Primary and Secondary Schools
Our programmes cover Phonics (Zip) , Decoding , Comprehension, and Vocabulary. ReadingWise is a viable 'one stop shop' for literacy intervention for any pupils who are struggling with their reading and literacy. This streamlines delivery for your primary and secondary schools in your local authority.
ReadingWise can deliver significant reading improvement for each pupil falling behind, whichever area of reading they are struggling with.
Over a Decade of Literacy Intervention For Primary and Secondary Schools
ReadingWise programmes are effective in both primary and secondary settings, for pupils with special needs, and those who are struggling with literacy in other ways. Our team has vast experience supporting schools and training teachers in every type of school from the smallest rural primary to the largest inner city secondary, and local authorities with over 50 schools.
Evidence-based reading interventions
Our programmes have been evidenced by the Department for Education ('gold standard' RCT) and by Cambridge University. The impact we deliver has been consistent across over 300,000 pupils across the UK.
The government-funded study showed that ReadingWise accelerated pupils' reading ages almost twice as fast as traditional classes. An average reading age increase of almost 10 months was achieved in under 1 term. The quantitative analysis was conducted by the widely respected Professor Becky Allen. The report can be read here.
Ten Reasons Why Local Authority Primary and Secondary Schools Need a Literacy Intervention Programme
- Enhancing literacy skills and educational outcomes for every pupil from reception (the start of KS1) through to the GCSEs.
- A ReadingWise literacy intervention programme can be tailored to address specific requirements, including for pupils with SEND and EAL needs. It also works well for Virtual Schools, Special Schools, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), and Alternative Provisions (APs).
- With every school, ReadingWise supports teachers and other staff in conducting a pre-launch assessment programme. Utilising data and assessment results, the programme can identify students who require additional support and provide targeted literacy interventions.
- Only 2 hours of training. We know how busy teachers and TAs are. So, we’ve made training easy. Staff at every level, including teachers, TAs, literacy leads, and SENDcos, are then trained in Zip, Vocab, Comprehension, and Decoding, the four modules available to raise reading levels for pupils in both primary and secondary schools.
- ReadingWise solves the problem for teachers: “Where do I start?”; “How do I create resources to improve literacy?” Our programme takes care of everything. ReadingWise also easily integrates with systems and software schools are already using, such as SIMS, Arbor, or Bromcom.
- An online literacy intervention programme can help teachers support parents and guardians too, so that even if a responsible adult can’t effectively support a child, this programme can help.
- Pupils who leave school with higher English grades and greater levels of reading fluency earn more. Adults with lower levels of literacy earn 7.1% less than those with a better understanding of reading.
- Literacy interventions change lives. In schools (primary and secondary), 20% of children fail to achieve adequate literacy levels before leaving school. This equates to “1 in 6 (16.4%) adults in England are estimated to have very low literacy” (OECD, 2016).
- Consequences of this range anywhere from unemployment to falling into criminal activity. According to the World Literacy Foundation, a 2018 study found that “illiteracy is estimated to cost the UK economy approximately £80 billion [per year].”
- Tragically, there’s a clear correlation between illiteracy, the ability to find work, and crime. A Ministry of Justice (MoJ) report in 2022 found that “57% of adults in prison in the UK have a reading level below that of an average 11-year-old.”
