ReadingWise Supports Lealands High School, Luton, With Good Ofsted Results

Another school we work with, Lealands High School, Luton, received a Good Ofsted inspection in 2023, with the inspectors impressed at their reading and SEND provisions.

Lealands High School in Luton is a foundation-based secondary school for children in years 7 to year 11 (KS3 - KS4). Although it isn’t part of an academy, it’s the founding school in the Lumen Partnership comprising that includes Lealands and three feeder primary schools, supporting children of all ages across Luton and surrounding Bedfordshire villages and towns.

Lealands selected ReadingWise Decoding in July 2016. The intervention is still in place as of 2024, and the school expects to continue working with us to support learners into the future.

In May 2023, Lealands had its Ofsted inspection, achieving a Good grade (previous inspections were also good or satisfactory).

Ofsted Inspection of a good school: Lealands High School

At ReadingWise, we are proud to champion the schools we work with. Here are a few of the highlights from the report:

“At Lealands, pupils learn to understand and respect others. It is a diverse community. Pupils new to the school say, ‘It is like joining a family’. Pupils from many backgrounds mix successfully and happily. Pupils learn through the curriculum about different parts of society.”

“Pupils learn a well-considered curriculum. They benefit from leaders’ high expectations of their learning. This includes pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). These pupils receive strong support. When pupils need extra help, this is effective. As a result, they build up their knowledge well.”

What does the Ofsted report say about reading?

“Leaders prioritise reading and literacy.”

“They plan carefully how pupils build up important vocabulary over time. Pupils value reading. The weakest readers get effective support to read more confidently. This helps them to understand their learning.”

As this shows:

  • Children do better with reading when schools prioritise it, as Lealands clearly does very well.
  • When children haven’t been supported well at primary school (especially with SEND or EAL needs) will struggle more when reaching secondary, so it’s crucial to put interventions in-place as quickly as possible.
  • Children of all ages who are struggling can catch up and reading will improve when additional support is provided, such as the ReadingWise programmes.
  • As we can see at Lealands, this contributes to higher reading and literacy attainment levels and confidence. The report notes that “effective support” is provided for weaker readers, and that support is delivered by ReadingWise
  • How ReadingWise supports reading and literacy at Lealands High School

ReadingWise is an online, evidence-backed, intervention programme designed for every aspect of reading – decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary. This provides leaders, teachers, TAs, and SENDcos with a coherent, unified approach to improving literacy.

To support literacy and reading across the school, Lealands benefits from access to the following module:

Decoding: So much more than just another phonics programme for Years 2-11. Our decoding module, for primaries and secondaries, develops deep independence in learners, empowers them, and consistently improves reading ages by over 9 months in just 20 hours.

Decoding is a powerful literacy intervention module.

  • It starts by assessing a learner’s reading age, then creating a carefully structured, personalised learning journey.
  • Learners work through blends, progress through common endings, words and sentences using a variety of innovative approaches to unlock reading.
  • Decoding starts with letter sound recognition and progresses through every four-syllable word in the first 3 Harry Potters.
  • Delivery: 20-25 minute sessions 3-5 times a week. Supervised by 1 trained TA working with 10 learners.

    Training for schools and teachers

Staff at every level, including teachers, TAs, literacy leads, and SEND specialists, were trained in Zip, Vocab, Comprehension, and Decoding, the four modules deployed to raise reading levels across this outstanding secondary school.
