The Recruit by Robert Muchamore
James Choke's tumultuous upbringing in a dysfunctional family often lands him in trouble at school. However, when tragedy strikes with the death of his mother, James finds himself thrust into a new environment: a children's home. Little does he know, this is just the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Recruited into the clandestine world of CHERUB, a covert organization originating from World War II, James undergoes rigorous training alongside other children aged between ten and seventeen. CHERUB's mission: to train young agents as spies, operating under the radar of adults, gathering intelligence crucial to bringing criminals and terrorists to justice. Officially non-existent, these young operatives blend seamlessly into society while executing high-stakes missions.
In Robert Muchamore's captivating debut novel of the CHERUB series, readers are immersed in James's world as he navigates his demanding basic training and embarks on his first undercover assignment. Tasked with thwarting a terrorist group, James's journey is both thrilling and perilous, showcasing the chilling realities of espionage and the resilience required to succeed.
Muchamore's narrative is as compelling as it is authentic, drawing readers into a world where danger lurks at every corner and trust is a luxury. From the intensity of James's training to the adrenaline-pumping moments of his mission, the story captivates with its vivid portrayal of secrecy and intrigue.
Born in Islington in 1972, Muchamore brings a unique perspective to his storytelling, having himself spent thirteen years as a private investigator. He is a passionate Arsenal supporter, and claims a special interest of watching people fall down holes!
It was his nephews' dissatisfaction with the lack of engaging reading material that sparked the creation of the CHERUB series – a passing comment about how ‘books were for geeks’, and there was ‘nothing cool to read’ stuck in Muchamore’s mind for several years before becoming a 20-year, 17-book series.
