The ReadingWise Story - Jump-Starting Reading

This post, and the accompanying video, outline some of the key features of the UK literacy landscape today, and outline the work we are doing to support positive change.

Stubborn
According to DfE statistics, since 2007 the percentage of children not achieving level 4 in reading has remained at a similar level (13% - 17%). This is in spite of many initiatives, both at government
level and through external agencies.

The Gap
It is a shocking statistic: of those children who did not achieve level 4 in English, 89% do not go on to get 5 A* - C GCSEs, including English and maths.
Social Implications
According to the Evening Standard, half of those arrested in London riots in the summer of 2011 were 'educational failures.' Over half of inmates in prisons in the UK have a reading age of 11 or below.
What we are doing
Along with many organisations we aim to reduce the cost of illiteracy both at the individual and societal level. The ReadingWise English literacy programme, from its birth in India where we've reached over 100,000 women, to our work with UK schools, aims to harness technology to provide a cost-effective and scalable way to improve literacy. We train teachers and teaching assistants, and focus on evidencing our work.
